“I am particularly drawn to confident figures that convey emotion in subtle ways, and my art is an attempt to capture and express this through a pared-back style and a minimalist technique.

I strive to create pieces that are both aesthetically pleasing and emotionally evocative through the elements of line, shape, and colour; often keeping some details back so that the viewer needs to insert themselves into the narrative and discover the meaning of the scene according to their own memories and experience.”

Elise Mendelle is a self-taught Canadian / British painter living and working in London. Using acrylic paints, her expressive brushstrokes and stripped back subjects are aimed at capturing the female figure and asking the viewer, ‘what happens next’? Interest in her work continues to grow, with her paintings now part of collections worldwide. She finds herself drawn to women in the modern world, how they present themselves, how they look, how they feel. By keeping her brushstrokes loose and rhythmical, she is able to keep the narrative wide open and invite interpretation into the presented snapshot moments.
