«Atmosphère evokes what envelops a scene without ever being fully named: a light, a tension, a quality of silence, an impression that lingers after the image has been seen.

It is this elusive dimension that I seek to preserve in my paintings. An image never reveals itself completely. Beyond what it represents, it is traversed by relationships between colours, contrasts, shadows, reflections and trajectories of light that alter our perception. Light does not merely illuminate figures and objects: it transforms them, draws them together or isolates them, revealing certain details while concealing others.

I work with these variables: the choice of framing, its proximity to the subject, the angle of vision, relationships of scale, the juxtaposition of colours and the circulation of light. They do not simply serve to construct the image. They allow me to convey something less visible: the particular sensation experienced when looking closely and attentively at a scene.

An atmosphere arises as much from light and colour as from the presence of people and objects. It takes shape through their relationships, through the way they inhabit the same space, encounter one another or seem absent from it. The figures are never entirely separate from the environment that surrounds them: they affect it just as much as they appear to be transformed by it.

I do not seek to impose a fixed interpretation or to confine the image within a predetermined narrative. I prefer to maintain an uncertain presence, something that cannot be fully defined. This element of mystery remains available to the viewer. It may shift according to their mood, memories and attention, but also according to the time of day and the light in which the painting is encountered.

Atmosphere may not be what we see. Rather, it may be what, within the visible, continues to elude us while still shaping our perception.«

Statement

Madeleine Guiton’s work explores perception as a sensitive and shifting experience.
Inspired by the phenomenological thought of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, she seeks to capture that fragile moment when seeing is not merely looking, but inhabiting the visible.
Her practice of oil painting on canvas is rooted in observing the world around her, which she captures through photography. She does not aim to faithfully reproduce these images, but to reveal their variations in presence—the subtle transformations that light and time enact upon the visible.
Whether it emanates from a screen or from the passage of daylight, light becomes the true subject of her work: a living, ever-changing substance that constantly alters what we believe we see.
“What interests me is what appears and disappears in the gaze.
Those moments when things are there, and then no longer there—when perception becomes uncertain.”
In her paintings, the visible shifts, fades, or overlaps, as if to remind us that seeing is always an act of interpretation.
Madeleine Guiton probes this ambiguous space between presence and absence, between image and memory.
Each painting thus becomes an experience of looking, an attempt to make the temporality of light and vision perceptible.

Through her work, she invites us to slow down and inhabit perception—to recognize, in the flicker of an image or the nuance of a hue, the very vibration of the living world.
