STATEMENT
Jayna is a British Indian artist from London. Her paintings focus on the side profiles of women from different cultures. Her art explores how cultural identity amongst women is visually communicated. She does this by focusing on the beauty and individuality of diversity amongst cultures through a means of traditional/non-traditional clothing and facial features, whilst subtly connecting them through shared themes of womanhood and heritage. The side profile, often called the “classical profile” is a timeless and universally understood pose in portraiture. Jayna paints the side profiles of women to symbolise grace and introspection. She centres women of all colour in her work to serve as a reflection of her own identity and lived experiences. She is aware that people of colour have historically been overlooked in art and media so her paintings offer a platform to celebrate the strength of women from different ethnic backgrounds. Each woman she paints represents their society’s ideals of beauty, status and spirituality.
