Rita  Chehab

ARTIST NOTE

Rita Chehab is a self-taught Lebanese “Award winning international Artist” currently based in Dubai. She was educated as an Economist, and worked at the bank for more than 10 years, issuing loans and juggling numbers all day. She also studied Spanish linguistics as well as delved into the passionate world of Tango Argentino reflecting her love of Latin culture. However, it was not until she got married and moved to Dubai, did her whole life start to take shape. When God blessed her with 2 lovely girls and motherhood took a front seat, Rita dedicated her entire self to being a great Mother and wonderful Wife. As much as this completely fills the heart, individuality must also be addressed. Rita’s self interests needed to share the stage with her responsibilities. This is when she ventured into painting.

At first, as inspired by her children, she focused on painting little girls, playing together, enjoying the simple and innocent things in life. These paintings were a reminder of our childhood, before the complexities of adulthood visit indefinitely. Then, she painted females in provocative, inspirational, and self-confident manner. It was a natural progression to revert back to painting women, since Rita wanted to discuss social issues through this medium.
Rita celebrates the empowerment of women, and the sheer beauty of the female existence. Behind each painting is an underlying insinuation of wonder and apprehension. Her paintings inspire viewers to reflect on their dreams and their regrets, simultaneously. This paradox is what transforms her paintings into stories that mimic most of the emotional experiences in our lives, and help the viewer to become a part of the artists’ world.

“My paintings are a reflection of my life as a mother and as a woman. It comes natural to me; this feeling that my emotions are escaping my heart.
I then capture them on my brush, as I transform a blank canvas into images of my imagination.

Every time I transform my white canvas into a painting from my imagination, I tell a story; my story; and the canvas flourishes to life.

I paint moments of joy, passion, fear, loneliness, sadness, love, togetherness, contentment.. I capture these moments with my brushes and colours, I then frame them on my canvas and embed them forever in my heart.

My paintings are a reflection of everyday desires and dreams. We all want to grow, to develop, to succeed! Our lives depend on this. To have purpose, and to spread positive emotions gives us a sense of growth on a personal and empathic level.

Every woman has her own Beauty that resides in her ‘Truth, Authenticity, Originality and Integrity.’ She is a beautiful creature that can define herself in all aspects.

The canvas and the Brush are the tools that allow me to explore my interiority, to transform deeply all my emotions, my feelings, into colours of my imagination and to travel without limits.

Open-mindedness, contentment, and even happiness are attributes we strive to attain, but unreachable if you don’t allow yourself to be free with your thoughts. We must refrain from fear, from apprehension, and embrace our destinies, for if we do not, we will never flourish.

When I observe my paintings on display, each one becomes a kind of visual diary, transposing my experiences and feelings into images that speak of life moments, where the simple everyday becomes something extraordinary.

I feel alive, wild and young everytime I imagine, paint, create.

With every stroke I capture joy, happiness, and excitement, celebrating my Art.

I live with the people from my imagination, I live their pain, love, joy, dreams and regrets.

It is as much an individual journey as it is a collective pursuit. We must exercise resilience, optimism, authenticity and vitality to achieve our goals in life”.  Rita Chehab.

Artistic Storytelling through paintings capturing and embracing human emotions and experiences through subtle expression.

1. What experiences, Spaces, Places or Concepts inspire you to create your work:
As a female, a mother of two young princesses, and a devoted wife, my life is not short of chaos. But every life needs expression, and needs to be heard. Painting is my medium of expression. I am constantly inspired by my kids, my daily life, and my self-empowerment. I paint what I live. With the same brush, I express my joy and my pain. As an Internationally Awarded, recognized artist, whatever message I need to convey, I let it shout through my art.

I have been described as an artist whose “artwork draws inspiration directly from her existence as a woman and a mother, taking the viewer into an emotional journey, where imagination, dreams, symbolism and poetry blend together to transform the seemingly mundane into surrealistic atmospheres of joy and excitement. Her ability to cause the viewer to pause, absorb and reflect on their own experiences, as if to say I’ve lived your story, brings each viewer closer to humanity. Her art pays tribute to challenges overcome, to pessimism destroyed, to chaos organized, and to dreams that come true”.

Inspired by the ocean, I use many shades of Blue in my pieces, to draw a positive emotional response, associated with the feeling of tranquillity, peace, depth, happiness and comfort.
Our social issues, problems and challenges, gives us, in retrospect, the feeling of gratitude for everything we have.

My daydreams and memories mingle in a poetic dance of symbolism, an aura of mystery, feelings, emotions, fragility of memories, inviting the viewers to pause, to reflect on their personal stories, where the painting becomes a powerful tool for introspection.

My personal journey of exploration into my inner self, conjures up emotions that I transform into the beauty I see in every detail of life. My surrealist approach gives the viewer the opportunity to interpret as their heart arouses. The intention is never to directly specify my emotions, but to allow interpretation, since each and every viewer comes to my work with his own Life struggles.

2. Tell us about your artwork or series you are currently working on.

  • Tribute to Georgette:

During my formative years, I had the fortune of friendship and Spiritual connection with a very unique and special person called Georgette.  Her steadfast faith in God, her firm confidence, her impossible strength, despite some difficult days and nights, never wavered. She was the epitome of femininity, laughter, and quintessential love of life.

I pay tribute to this special person; my way to remember her…how I imagine her…I draw her today. Mature with a young spirit, always smiling to me from above, spreading the flowers’ scent everywhere she goes. Each time I think of her, it gives me the feeling of positivity, of hope. This series is a way of acknowledging the impact she has had on my life, and still does. This way of thanking her, through my work, is a small token of my appreciation of her life.  Even after 10 years since she went to heaven, she still lives in my thoughts and heart.

  • Les Jolies Rondelles:

The human proportions in this new series are purposely exaggerated, creating an ironic, free representation.  The intent is to evoke a sense of humour, joyous retrospect, provocative reflection and contemplation. Not to be taken literally, the views is to suspend his conventional way of thinking, and transcend beyond the normal conception, and essentially view beyond the physical, so as to reach the emotional without distraction.

Beautiful women are represented with exaggerated hourglass figures, in a joyful and playful way, where happiness, laughter, dance, music, confidence, gratitude are all combined to evoke a sense of carefree spirit and nonchalance.

  • Funny Elder Women:

Society is constantly obsessed with aging and youth.  Graceful aging is a gift only a few possess.  But that is not the case in my series, Funny Elder Women.  Here, I abolish the fear of aging, and in fact, neglect the reality of time.  This group of elder women live as they have always lived, enjoying the time they have present, not living in regret or pressure of sand running out of the hourglass.  They have frozen the clock.  They spend their days laughing, embodying togetherness, reminiscing on memories of sadness and joy.  They dress as they have always dressed. They wear their faces as they have always wore.  They dance as they have always done before.  Time will not change them. Time will not defeat them. Time is just a reason to Live Better and Live Free.
