ARTIST NOTE

Veronica McLaren is a part-time independent artist currently living in Rhode Island. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 2007. Between 2008 and 2013, she operated under the freelance venture Starina’s Art where she created digital products for artists within the New England independent music scene. After a lengthy hiatus, Starina’s Art was created in November 2023. Under this entity, Veronica creates original artworks based in abstract expressionism and dark surrealism using multiple mediums, primarily digital art, acrylic paint, and photography, which are available for purchase. Since restarting Starina’s Art, Veronica and her artwork have been showcased both domestically and internationally in numerous exhibitions and publications.

«My work is inspired by abstract expressionism and dark surrealism, with photography making an appearance in my work as well. I am deeply inspired by my environment, and I have grown fascinated by historical and cultural settings which I have worked into some of my art. I try to evoke a sense of reflection and nostalgia with a touch of poetic sensibility. Through my work, I aim to connect with viewers, stir emotions, and shift perspectives». (Veronica McLaren).

1. What experiences, spaces, places, or concerns inspire you to create your work?

Since my early teenage years, I have always enjoyed the environment of wandering graveyards and cemeteries. This has only grown over the years as I learned and respected the historical and cultural significance of these points of interest, in addition to historical and cultural institutions that may be attached to them. It only seems reasonable to want to capture these locations and share my enjoyment with others.
